A hospital orderly checked up on Jessica who was free from her casts for the first time in months and although her mouth was still braced preventing her from talking asked her if she was ok. She was unable to respond properly as she was heavily medicated and pretty much in a daze. Her eyes had no sparkle and her hair hung limp around her shoulders. She lay in the bed all small and tiny apart from the massive diaper that looked huge around her tiny frame. Her eyes closed and she appeared to be sleeping. He was concerned for the girl and knew she would be returning to some sort of casting clinic later that day. He could see she did not need casting but a good meal and to have her medication stopped.

Natalie woke up early the next morning, the her teeth were still aching and her head hurt. The mirror that had been put in place above her forehead was reflecting off the sun right into her eyes. She tried to get off the bed but couldn’t, the cast was so heavy and it hurt her arms to try and move, she knew she couldn’t take much more of this, she wanted to talk to her mom but couldn’t, she decided to write a note but realised that she couldn’t actually see the paper and the mirror reflected everything backwards. She decided to try and get in the shower, the cast had to come off. If she could get it wet enough maybe it would dissolve? She didn’t know but had to try it.
Brooke had spent the last few hours going through the paper work and making enquiries and was no convinced that something was up with the work that Dr Collins was carrying out. Whilst she loved it when he cast her she knew that the other girls were not receiving proper treatment and seemed to be there just to please Dr Collins. Unfortunately she didn’t realise that Michael had been watching her every move and had told Dr Collins.
The Dr was angry. How dare Brooke question his methods? He decided that she would pay for this and decided to invite her round to his that evening. He knew the lure of some recreational casting would ensure her attendance at his and once she was there she really would regret being so nosy.
Dr Collins showed the students around the facility rather quickly, they enjoyed meeting Britney and Jessica and asked him lots of questions about their treatments. Returning to reception he showed them the Mummy cast, he didn’t tell them that Natalie was inside it but he let the students feel around it and answered their questions whilst giving a brief talk on the history of casting.
Natalie could feel people knocking on her cast and hoped that it would be over soon. Her muscles were aching and she felt rather sick.
As the students gathered around Dr Collins thanked them for their visit and advised that should any of them require an internship he would be happy to help out. He was keen to expand the facility and an intern would be helpful. Of course he would keep some select patients for himself.

The next day Dr Collins arrived at the facility early. He discharged the night nurse and set about some paperwork, he had been told the previous night that a bunch of med students would be visiting the centre that day and he needed to get some things in order prior to their visit, his biggest problem was Natalie, he had left her lock in the dark room the previous day and knew that the med students would be sure to ask questions about her questionable treatment. As always, he was a man with a plan.
Entering the room he turned the light on and removed the eye patches from Natalie’s eyes, they were red and swollen where she had been crying. Even though he removed the rubber gag ball she didn’t speak as she was too afraid and her breaths were shallow as she was so scared. Once her breathing returned to normal Dr Collins told her of his plan although he was less than forthcoming with the truth.

After a long sleepless night spent crying and having bad dreams Natalie was dreading college that day, her mom came into her room and, after changing her diaper she placed her into her chair. After the straps were tightened she placed a blanket over her waist and legs to cover up her diaper. Natalie was mortified as her mom combed her hair and brushed her teeth for her. Natalie didn’t even bother to put some makeup on, she knew she would cry it all off.
She was placed into the back of the special car her mom had loaned and driven to college, she was met there by her friends who wheeled her into her first class. People stared at her the whole way, she could cope with the cast as she knew that people had seen casts on a lot of other students although none of them as big as hers but the halo brace and diaper she couldn’t cope with. People just stared and whispered in front of her face. It got worse when in her first class the lecturer told her that he believed she may benefit by using the college’s remedial learning section, she would be with other disabled students and would be able to learn at her own pace. She argued that she wasn’t disabled but had to give in when she realised that she couldn’t keep the same speed as the other students, she couldn’t write properly as she could not bend forward and the sheer size of her cast and halo brace was distracting the other students. She promised herself that she would not come back tomorrow no matter what her mom said, it was too humiliating. She didn’t have to stay, she was 19 and able to leave when she wanted too.

Dr Collins was pleased that his plans were coming together nicely. He knew that Natalie would not comply with her bracing plan and had already decided that this would be her next course of treatment.
He covered her body from the top of her chest down to her knees in stockinet and provided minimal padding. He needed severe compression and this would ensure her back was treated correctly. He decided to use plaster as he preferred it to fibreglass.
Her legs were spread as far apart as they would go and once she was in a sitting position there were held out at either side of her body. He wrapped rolls of thick plaster around both of her legs from the knees up right to the top of her thighs and continued around her hips and to the top of her chest. He kept her back completely straight and once the cast had started to dry he reinforced the tops of her legs and turned it into a double hip spica. He used lots of plaster to keep it in place and placed a wooden spreader bar just above her knees, he guessed it was about four foot long, the widest spreader bar he had ever used at the knees. She was now completely encased from her knees to the top of her chest. He affixed the bottom portion of the Halo brace to her cast using the sheepskin lining over her shoulders and proceeded to drill the top part into her head. Once it was all fixed up he left her to dry under the heat lamps. She would remain asleep for a good few hours yet. He hadn’t placed her in a diaper yet, he would wait for her to wake up for that.

The next morning Natalie awoke after a sleepless night, her body was aching and her eyes hurt from crying so much, she felt dreadful and realised that she couldn’t even get out of bed, she tried to call her mom to help her up but it just came out in gurgles as she was lying down she could not open her mouth properly. She tried wriggling off the bed and landed with a thud on the floor, she needed to go to the bathroom and as she waiting on the floor she realised that she had wet herself.
As her mom entered the room she was upset to find Natalie crying and resolved to do whatever she could for her daughter, unfortunately she had an important meeting that morning so she was unable to take Natalie to college, fortunately there was a bus which ran by the college and she would see that Natalie got onto the bus then surprise her in the afternoon by picking her up.
Natalie approached the new clinic with her mom and was impressed by how nice and new it was, Dr Collins old office had been rather scruffy but this new office was impressive. He even had a receptionist who was busy typing up records and filing them in a glass filing cabinet. She was impressed.
Her heart was beating as she entered the office as this was the moment she had been dreading, her college friends did not know about her condition and she did not intend to tell them. She would hide the brace under larger clothes and claim it was weight gain. She was due to hook up with her friends that evening for the movies and cocktails and she was pleased it would be dark at the movie theatre.
Natalie awoke early the next morning, her back was aching and she found it hard to breathe through the tight plastic brace her body was encased in. She automatically tried to sit up and realised she could not do so without using her arms, as she pushed herself up with her arms she hoped that her new brace would not be as bad as this one.
After washing she put on a pair of baggy sweats as advised by Dr Collins and a pink tank top. She had been told it would be easier if she wore the brace on top of her clothes but she didn’t want anyone seeing it, it was ugly and horrible. She made an effort to look nice for Dr Collins’ clinic as it made her feel a bit better, she combed her hair and applied some lip-gloss and a touch of mascara and set off with her mom to the clinic.
